September classes - improvisation tools

September (5,12,19,26)
In September we will broaden our focus again on some more basic improvisation tools and techniques in dance. Slowly we will introduce working with the voice as well. Some techniques will help you create movements for yourself, other techniques help you to create group movements. We will introduce the concept of scores, in which we define movement improvisations with rules, like in games. At the end of the session we will have some time for open improvisation practice.

Through the last 70 years or so, more and more focus came on improvisation as an art by itself. More and more techniques and styles were developed. Throughout the year we will visit different techniques from different in influential improvisers. There are David Zambrano (passing through), Katie Duck (Amsterdam school), Steve Paxton (contact improvisation) Ruth Zaporah (action theater)
Simone Forti (Judgeton Church generation) In the future we will also pass the View points method, Authentic movement, Grotowski's drame reasearch, and more.

Here is one more video of the kind of things that might happen in our class.
Anna Halprin is one of the earliest (contemporary) improvisers, now at age 97, she is still teaching and dancing

August classes - Action theater improvisation

August (22,29)

Together we create stories, conversations, music and songs, dances.

July classes - scene creation

July (4,11,18)
In June we learned how to create movements and a movement language. This month we will bring them together scenes. We will start playing with movements in different configurations and so create different meanings. We will teach you various tools that will help you to adjust rhythm, focus, impact, poetry, dramaturgy, flow, direction, etc. so that you are able to create a strong storyline.

June classes - movement composition

June (6,13,20,27)
Let's learn how to create new movements for ourselves. Every week we will guide you through a different creative process to find a new movement language. Some will be based on outside inspiration sources, like a shodo painting, a film, a poem, a leaf pattern, other processes follow more specific movement patterns from within the body. One idea can be very conceptual, some other idea is more dramatic. Let's get out of our usual boxes and let the whole world become our new playground.

May classes - Flying Low technique

May (1,8,15,22,29)

David Zambrano's Flying Low technique is a wonderful way to safely fly in and out of the floor. Soft enjoyable and fast. This technique influenced so many now famous dancecompanies.

March & April classes - Anatomical Release technique

March (6,13) April (10,17,24)

In March and April we will explore our movements with the help of our bodies' anatomical structures. It is the starting point to an open ended inquiry into the relationship between our mind and our body. Through deep release of the bodies tensions and a slowing down of our mind's daily chattering we come to a place where intuition promotes action, and action influences and develops intuition.

Originated by Mary Fulkerson O'Donnell and beautifully honored by Helen Roberts in this little 2 minute video:
